Thomas U. Walter was an architect. Born in Philadelphia in 1804, Walter began his career as an apprentice to his father in bricklaying and stone masonry. While working with his father, Walter trained in the office of William Strickland and attended the School of Mechanic Arts at the Franklin Institute, then under the direction of John Haviland.
